Ed's Comic of the Week 10/10/12

Uncanny Avengers #1 came out this week and it was just as good as I expected it to be. Writer Rick Remender and artist John Cassidy have done a great job at launching this new post-AVX series of X-Men teamed up with Avengers. Remender skillfully encapsulates the various trials and tribulations of the last couple of months and sets up the new status quo beautifully. Captain America's reasoning for the existence of this new squad of superheroes makes sense and the choice of featured characters in intriguing. In many ways it reminded me of Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men series from several years ago.

Of course, John Cassidy was the artist for that series as well and he does his usual amazing job on the art chores. He's always been particularly good at small details like, you know, actually drawing people who look like they are wearing clothes as opposed to sprayed on body paint and his facial expressions do more to convey the characters thoughts and feelings than a lot of working actors in the movies. His sense of design, especially with the color palette, is impressive and the big reveal at the end of the first issue has just the right amount of dread and surprise.

All in all, a very successful first issue and if all of the Marvel NOW! titles are as accomplished as this then I do believe we are looking at a banner year of stories from Marvel.
