EDitorial 7/16/20

Hey, Folks!

In my wildest and most distorted fantasies I could never have predicted a 2020 quite as wild and wooly as the one we are getting. I mean, putting aside the plagues and the social unrest and the murder hornets and Carol Baskins, we can just look at the comic industry and stare, slack-jawed, at the amount of crazy change we’ve gone through in the last few months. I actually feel a bit breathless and I sit here every Thursday morning trying to decide what to talk about in my Editorial and what to just keep quiet about in the hopes that it magically fades away. There are some days that I would much rather continue discussing the pros and cons of keeping too much powdered sugar in your pantry on the GBBO Facebook page then talk about the comic industry.

But today is not such a day. I want to start out with something positive this week. Despite my knee deep anxiety and general worry wart nature, new D.C. Comics distributor UCS has continued to impress with their second week of comic distribution. I received my new D.C. shipment on Saturday which is something that I can’t ever remember happening. It was simultaneously invigorating and surprising. Strangely enough, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. You know, half the books missing, the other half damaged, getting the wrong order, etc., etc. But nothing of the sort occurred at all. The shipment was well-packed and it was all there. There was one single damaged comic and everything else was perfect. UCS even shipped the Death Metal #2 incentive covers in a bag and a board! It’s been like some beautiful dream come true, but I do admit to being a little worried about what happens when the honeymoon is over. Darn my worry wart nature!

I do have to confess to one problem with UCS. They have no reorders on new product available! It is so frustrating because the inventory numbers I used to order the current titles are mostly from before The Apocalypse and are a bit out of date. I mean, thank goodness I didn’t do what some retailers did and cut my numbers anticipating a business slowdown or else I would really be screwed. Literally every single D.C. Comic that came out this week was going to backorder as I put together my Sunday reorder last week. This is, of course, manageable in the long run…I just need to start upping my numbers on FOC, but in the short run we might end up having some quantity problems on books that pre-Apocalypse would be fine. I’m not quite sure what the problem is with UCS not having more reorders available, but I can hazard a guess. I suspect that there is a certain percentage of retailers who didn’t get their numbers in by FOC and the extra copies UCS had earmarked for reorders were sucked up to cover accounts who didn’t get their orders in on time. Again, pure speculation married to reading between the lines on the retailer Facebook pages have caused me to make this speculation. In any case, it should be a strictly temporary problem and one that will be adjusted for once everyone gets in the groove of the new distribution process.

Things with Diamond Comics Distributors are not going quite as well, but it’s hard to see it as being totally their fault. After coming out of the post-Apocalyptic gate pretty strongly, Diamond has been faltering a bit in the last few weeks. The regular weekly shipments have been getting here on a timely basis and, for the most part, damages and shortages are about at the same level. But reorder shipments are completely screwed up right now and I don’t even want to get into the continuing saga of trying to get everything replaced that was in the UPS destroyed box of a month ago. (Yes…a box was destroyed a month ago and, after half a dozen calls/e-mails assuring me that I would get everything that was destroyed in the box I STILL don’t have everything.) The Apocalypse has clearly hurt Diamond and in ways that are only now becoming apparent.

You see, in the “Old Days” I would place a reorder on Sunday afternoon to restock the store as well as to order more new product if it looks like I’m going to need it for the following Wednesday. The reason why I have to wait until Sunday to order more product for the following Wednesday is that Diamond’s system is set up so that you cannot have an item direct shipped if, by shipping it direct, it will appear at the store before it’s official release date. So in order to have it for the new release rack on Wednesday I have to order on Sunday so that they will be shipped directly to me rather than having to wait for it to come with my regular shipment the following week. This system has served me well over the decades and it also helps to make sure that anyone who orders something I normally don’t carry will have it waiting for them when they come in on Wednesday. It was perfect and it was a thing of beauty.

Unfortunately it also looks like it is a thing of the past. For the last several weeks I have noticed that our reorders, once a bedrock of stability, are now anything but. Sometimes the shipment takes 5 days to get here and sometimes 3 and once it took a whole week! I couldn’t figure out what was going on and we were getting precious little information from Diamond. When they finally commented on it they shifted the blame to UPS saying that UPS was backed up and that was the reason we weren’t seeing things on our regular schedule. But that claim started to ring hollow when everything else, from the personal to the professional, was arriving smack on time from UPS. We have now been given another reason for the back up of shipments and it sounds a bit more on the nose.

Apparently, Diamond has been having some major staffing issues since the Apocalypse hit. If I am reading their press release correctly, Diamond warehouses are running at 70% employee capacity because of the Covid-19 situation. The Olive Branch warehouse in Mississippi, where we receive our reordered product, is running at 50% employee capacity because of a recent flare up of cases in that state. Diamond is waiting for employee corona testing to be completed as well as dealing with employees in self-quarantine while at the same time trying to re-outfit their warehouses to accommodate social distancing. Oh! And there is the small matter of losing 30% of their business overnight because one of their major vendors pulled out of their system. Yeah, I guess that could explain the problem.

In the meantime, my reorders are running behind schedule. The reorder I placed on Sunday was originally scheduled for delivery today, but I just checked and now it appears that it won’t be here until Friday. Oh, well…nothing to lose my mind over although I did top off all of the current new Marvel books and I could have used those copies today…lol. In any case, if you don’t see a title on the rack PLEASE mention it to Steve or I. Chances are that I have more on order and already ont heir way and we would be thrilled to put you down for a copy when the reorder finally does arrive. Also, if you are a subscription form customer and something is missing from your pull it is probably due to the same issue, but if I forget to mention something to you always ask. I’m full of useful information!

Hey! Remember that destroyed box I’ve been endlessly going on about for a month? Color me amazed, but our missing copies of the AWA title, Year Zero #2, are on the invoice for next week! Yes, if you missed issue #2 then it appears we will be receiving the title despite endless backorders as well as an e-mail to AWA themselves in a desperate attempt to find ten copies. Geez, Virginia, maybe there IS a Santa after all!

I added some more old comics to the back issue bins last weekend. There was a smattering of New Teen Titans as well as a huge amount of New Mutants back issues from the 80’s. I’ve also added a goodly amount of the 1987 Flash series back issues as well as a pretty complete run of Fury of Firestorm. Did you know that Felicity (from the Arrow TV show) first appeared in Fury of Firestorm? I didn’t even know she was in the comics! In any case, if you haven’t checked out our back issue bins for a minute then now is the time for a reexamination! Make sure you check out the D.C./Marvel miniseries sections…they are full of comic book goodness these days!

Free Comic Book Summer continues on its merry way next week! New giveaway titles next week include Spider-Man Venom #1, Dark Ark Instinct (from Aftershock), Horizon Zero Dawn (from Titan), and the Year of Heroes Special (from Valiant)! Monarch Comics will have limited amounts of these titles for FREE on July 22nd! Please stop by the store, get your freebies, and take a look around!

I’m kind of burying the lead with this issue, but I figure I need to make a statement aside from the quick mention I mad eon our Facebook page. Obviously, the Covid-19 situation is continuing to escalate and I’m sure that you’ve heard about the recent Toledo City Ordinance that was put in place by Toledo City Council on Monday that mandates mask wearing for everyone out in public. As you know, Steve and I have kept our masks on since we reopened in the hopes that it would help keep our customers safe considering that the two of us are in contact with a couple hundred people a week. We have encouraged our beloved customers to do the same and, for the most part, a good percentage of you, despite whether or not you believe in the measure, have respected our requests to cover your faces in the store. Once again I want to thank each and every one of you who have gone along with the request. You have no idea how appreciative I am of your efforts. Now we are being told that we HAVE to require everyone to be masked with the understanding that if we are caught with folks in the store not wearing a mask we will eventually be levied a fine of $150.

Now, understand that I do think that the masks are a good idea and I have always believed that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I also take care of my elderly father and he has several health issues that would make Covid-19 a death sentence for him so with the amount of people I come into contact in an average week I find it somewhat reassuring that I’m doing something to protect myself from infection. All of that being said, it is not my job to be The Mask Police. I am not interested in convincing anyone or imposing my will on them despite my belief that at this point simply wearing a mask is pure politeness and seems to be a pretty innocuous request. So Steve and I will continue to encourage folks to wear a mask while in the store and we still have a small amount of masks available to those of you who come in and don’t have a mask, but we won’t be barring entry to those of you who refuse to wear a mask. I have absolutely no desire to end up on a YouTube video or be the target of online outrage via Facebook or Google reviews. As in most things you must be the master of your own conscience and decided what is best for you. I am grateful to those of you who do use the mask.

And that’s it for me, Folks! Steve is busily preparing for a trip to the recycle bins so I’m going to have to man the register for our Thursday afternoon rush and I can’t merrily type away here while there’s eager customers looking for a bit of that Monarch service! I hope that everyone enjoys the weekend and I look forward to seeing you soon!

EDitorial 7/9/20

Hey, Folks!

This week turned out way better than I had any right to expect. It was, of course, the first shipment from new D.C. Comics distributor UCS. I haven’t had to deal with multiple distributors for comic book product for a long time and the last experience I had with it was during the Distributor Wars of the late 90’s and despite the fact that it was over twenty years ago I still wake up at night with cold sweats remembering it. All thing considered, UCS did an admirable job of getting our books to us in a timely and, more importantly, sellable condition. Only two single comic shortages and half of our shipment showed up on Monday with the other half following on Tuesday with Diamond’s shipment. I am well pleased. Still futzing around with their reorder system, but that seems pretty stable as well. I am cautiously optimistic that this will be a smooth transition.

Now that’s not to say that there aren’t still flaws to address. At this point I have to bounce back and forth between Diamond and UCS for reordering D.C. product, particularly D.C. backlist items (like trade paperbacks and hard covers). I was going to take the leap and just begin ordering all of my D.C. stuff from UCS, but apparently they aren’t quite stocked up on older items which necessitates getting them from Diamond. Also, Monarch Comics has had enough weeks in business post-apocalypse/shutdown to realize that we have a nice uptick in business and that the pre-apocalypse numbers for a wide variety of periodicals has gone up and needs adjusting. Since I now have two companies from which to cull reorders you would think it would make things easier, but, alas, there doesn’t seem to be the amount of overstock ready to fill reorders that I was expecting. Whether this has to do with the precarious business standing of Diamond, the inexperience of the new distributor UCS in ordering overstock, or the cautiousness of comic publishers in printing overstock in an uncertain retail environment I don’t know, but it’s probably a mixture of all three. In any case, I’m working hard to navigate the new intricacies of this wild, new comic book retailing landscape and I will continue to give you my level best.

Now you may remember a couple of weeks ago I reported a missing 60lb box from Diamond. You may also recall that I was told the box was “completely destroyed” by UPS and I was assured at the time that all of the missing items would be replaced. Well, 6 customer service reps, a half a dozen phone calls, a boatload of e-mails, and three weeks later we have not yet received the balance of everything that was missing from that fateful box. I was hopeful that my last conversation with a Diamond rep had the problem taken care of, but I’m afraid that the solution that I thought was coming is sadly nowhere in sight. To be fair, the bulk of the order has been replaced, but there are a couple of titles we haven’t seen yet. I suppose it is fortunate that the most of what has still not been replaced were single copy special orders here and there, but the two main titles I have been waiting for are Teen Titans #42 and Year Zero #2. I have decided to write off Diamond at this point as I don’t believe my blood pressure can stand another fruitless phone call explaining to yet another customer rep the whole story from soup to nuts, so I have gone another direction in my attempt to resole this situation. The Teen Titans were easy…al I did was check to see if UCS still had them in stock and ordered from them. SO those of you still waiting for Teen Titans #42 SHOULD see them next week. The Year Zero #2 (from new publisher, AWA) are more problematic as Diamond is the only distributor who carries them and they are currently sold out of the issue. I tried e-mailing AWA directly and explaining my problem with the hope that they would have a few copies laying around the office, but, unfortunately, I was informed that they were sold out as well. The AWA representative that I e-mailed with was very nice, however, and promised to look into the problem with Diamond. I was, like, “Yeah, good luck with that…” In any case, I’m afraid that I will not be able to supply any copies of the second issue of Year Zero and, as a result, after next week’s issue #3 (which was too close to publication for me to cancel orders) Monarch Comics will no longer be carrying this title on the rack. I will, of course, special order copies for this of you who still want to try and follow the book, but I know from experience that if I can’t supply the second issue of a new series then the sales on any additional issues will be difficult at best. If you are a fan of the book then please reach out to me and let me know. If I get enough requests for future issues then I will most assuredly revisit this decision. In any case, I will be carrying the inevitable trade paperback when it is released because I really did enjoy the first issue and I’m curious to see where it is going.

Next week begins the official roll out for this year’s FCBD titles! Of the FCBD material being released, Monarch Comics will have copies of My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic (from IDW), Power Rangers Ranger Slayer (from Boom! Studios), and X-Men (from Marvel Comics). These titles will be available FREE of charge to anyone wandering into the store while supplies last. For my subscription form customers I’ve also included them on this week’s sub form and if you’d like a copy then please feel free to order it there. Please be aware that I didn’t order nearly the same amount of copies for these titles as I would for the big FCBD event that we normally have in May, but I do believe I have more than enough copies to cover all of our wonderful customers. You guys deserve a little something for free as good as you’ve been to us during the reopening of the comic industry.

Many of you are already aware of this, but I am currently in the process of bringing in hundreds of “new” back issue comics into stock from what I’ve begun referring to as my private reserve. Yes, Mr. Katschke needs to clean out his storage spaces and I figure now is as good a time as ever to begin processing the literal thousands of comic books that are currently residing in my basement and garage. There is no rhyme or reason to this gradual unboxing. I am literally just randomly grabbing a couple of boxes a week and sorting through them when I have a moment between taking care of customers and doing my usual operations stuff. After sorting through around twelve boxes of comics I can now inform you that we have a huge new stock of back issues, including runs of the Superman titles, Batman and family titles (including Birds of Prey, Catwoman, Robin, Nightwing), Green Lantern (mostly from the Kyle Rayner era), Flash (including most of the Waid/Johns run), Fury of Firestorm, and many, many more. I have a huge amount of new dollar box material as well, although not all of it has made it out on the floor as of yet because I simply don’t have the space…lol. If you are interested in checking these boxes out before they get out on the floor then please ask me. I’ll be happy to haul them out of the back room for your perusal. Make sure you take a look the next time you come in!

Interesting news on the Marvel front this week. Remember how back in May Marvel announced a bunch of previously solicited comics were NOT going to be published as “floppies” and that you would have to either get digital copies or buy them in trade collections to finish them? Well, Marvel has changed their minds…lol. The following is a list of previously cancelled single issues that are now going into print publication after all. I’m not sure yet whether they will be re-FOCed or even resolicitated, but I hope this brings some of you happiness in the knowledge that these books will be coming in for you!

I keep thinking that there is something I meant to mention here this week that I’m forgetting, but after staring at the screen for ten minutes I can’t think of what it could possibly be so I’m just going to wrap this up and get the sub form live for those of you waiting for the important stuff this week…😊

I hope everyone has a terrific weekend and manages to get through it without melting or getting washed away in flood waters!

EDitorial 7/1/20

Hey, Folks!

I suppose I should start out this week’s EDitorial by reminding everyone that Monarch Comics will be closed on Saturday, July 4th, for the observance of Independence Day. I’m not sure why I bother as we have never been open on the Fourth of July, but I still want to make sure that everybody knows. Additionally, because the ship week was so tiny what with no new Marvel or D.C. books, I want to also let you know that I will be out of the office Friday through Sunday. I just figured that this would be the time to take a couple of days off as next week will be the first week we receive D.C. Comics from our new distributor.

I have checked with our new distributor, USC, and I was delighted to find a copy of our invoice for next week’s books on the back end of their website! WOO HOO! Why so excited by an invoice? It means that our orders were received, logged, and we are being charged for them. The chances of us actually receiving the orders has increased exponentially and a big portion of the low level anxiety I have been living with since the new distributor announcement has now melted away. I’m assuming at this point that we will see our D.C. Comics on Tuesday alongside the Diamond shipment, but honestly we won’t know until next week. Unfortunately, I don’t have any shipping information as of yet, so I don’t have a shipment tracking number to check and therefore can’t see where the shipment is in the supply line. I’m not too worried though. If they’ve generated an invoice that means the stuff should be on its way.

Meanwhile, we are still dealing with he aftermath of Diamond and UPS incompetence from last week. As you may recall, we were shorted a 60lb box of books because UPS “destroyed” it in transit. In addition to the missing books from that ill-fated box, Diamond managed to short us all of our Marvel Previews catalogs. Well, four phone calls and four different customer service reps at Diamond has managed to get me MOST of the missing titles and the Marvel Previews are set to arrive this afternoon. Titles  we are still waiting for include Teen Titans #42, TMNT Jennika #3, Year Zero #2 along with a small number of special ordered titles. I have an e-mail out about them now (that would count as FIVE calls into Diamond about the issue), but I haven’t heard back yet. Hopefully we will have these titles in before Christmas.

Speaking of Diamond/UPS, I’m not entirely certain what the deal-io is but there is a serious kink in the supply line chain right now. Usually when I place a reorder it is two business days away. So, when I place my regular Sunday afternoon reorder for items due out I can generally be assured that I will see it by Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately, apparently UPS has had a surge in packages and as a result we are seeing things a day or two later. So any special orders or restocks that have been placed in the last week have their delivery to the shop delayed. It looks like the reorder I placed on Sunday may not be here until Friday. SO if you have placed any special orders either in person or through the subscription form things are running a bit behind, but I WILL have them for you soon. Sorry for the lousy service…hopefully it will improve soon.

Well, that’s it for me! I’m trying desperately to get this up and posted before the end of business today so that I can kind of, you know, sail through Thursday doing as little as possible before my mini-vacation starts. I’m waiting for some file updates from Diamond, however, and I can’t finish the subscription form until they are posted. So if you see this on Wednesday you’ll know that Diamond came through for the win!

Have a great holiday, Folks, and I’ll see ya next week!

EDitorial 6/25/20

Hey, Folks!

This has certainly been an interesting week for the store. As I’m sure many of you have already heard UPS somehow managed to “destroy” (Diamond’s description, not mine) a 60lb box that had more than a few comics in it. From what my customer rep told me the box had to be duct taped back together and returned to Diamond’s warehouse. I am not sure exactly how such a thing happens, but there you go. Luckily, everything was available for replacement (again, at least according to Diamond) and the only things that were not immediately available were a couple of single copy variant covers that were special ordered. I was told that the order would be processed first thing Wednesday morning and that the missing books would be here by Friday.

That was apparently wishful thinking. Wednesday morning came and I received an e-mail from Diamond explaining that shipments were being picked up from the warehouse at the appropriate time, but apparently “UPS has notified us that they are experiencing delays throughout their transportation network due to volume”. What does that mean to us? Well, I just checked our shipment tracking and, lo and behold, the box of missing books is NOT going to be here by Friday. Color me shocked. I’m going to have to get on the horn with Diamond today and find out exactly when we can expect to see all of the titles we were missing from our shipment this week. I can say that the reorder I put in every Sunday which is usually here by Wednesday is now going to show up today…so that’s something, I guess.

Here’s the list of titles that we are currently missing from this week’s shipment. I want to stress that if you ordered these books they will still be held for you once I get them in the door and apologize for the shoddy service. The only good news is that there is almost literally nothing shipping in next week so those of you who missed a title or two will have something to pick up next week…lol.

Here’s the list. Please note that this is primarily stuff that goes out on the New Release rack. There were also special order titles that didn’t make it in yet either and those will be pulled and held for you as well.

AQUAMAN #60 VAR ED

BATMAN #93

FLASH #756

IRON MAN 2020 #4

MARVEL PREVIEWS V.5 #1

STAR WARS ADVENTURES CLONE WARS #2

SUICIDE SQUAD #6 VAR ED

TEEN TITANS #42

TMNT JENNIKA #3

YEAR ZERO #2

Next week is quite possibly the smallest shipping week in living memory. Okay…not MY living memory, as that stretches back to the far reaches of time and space when there weren’t the sheer amount of titles being published, but it is the smallest in a good long while. As a result, I’ve decided to take the holiday weekend off and won’t be in the store on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Of course, we’ll be closed on Saturday because of Independence Day anyway.

Also, I was just informed on Monday that my Dad has to go into Toledo Hospital on Tuesday for a heart catherization with a possible side order of Heart stent. Of course, catherization and stents are like old friends to my Dad and I’m not to concerned with the actual procedures, but I am terrified of taking him to the hospital with all this Covid craziness going on. The last thing I need is Dad to get The Bug and then deal with that on top of everything else that is wrong with him. In any case, I’m not sure what my schedule is going to look like on Tuesday and there may not be a Monarch Comics Afternoon Delight/AT NIGHT episode. Of course, with the size of the shipping week there would only be, like, ten titles to show you anyway…lol…so it won’t be a huge loss, but I do enjoy our little get togethers and hope I am able to record it. In any case, there won’t be any interruption in regards to your sub orders being pulled. I am, as always, on the case.

I also want to assure everyone that I FINALLY heard back from our new distributors, USC, and they have let me know that our account has been approved and we should be getting our first shipment of DC products on 7/6. I have yet to receive anything from them, so I have no idea what the service is going to look like or how things like damages and shortages or reorders are going to be handled. I also don’t if we will see the shipment on Monday or Tuesday or even Wednesday. Let me tell you that it is going to be a wait filled with suspense and trepidation. Still, I guess none of us are owed a boring life. I’m going to try and be optimistic about it, however, and hope for the best. There’s always time for hand wringing and wailing to the heavens if it doesn’t turn out perfectly.

I need to address another situation that I have been loath to even mention here for reasons which shall become clear. Yes, it is true that D.C. Comics has officially made Tuesday the release date for their product. In the past all companies have more or less agreed to make Wednesday the “official” new comic book day and it still remains as such for all the other publishers. D.C. made this decision in a bid to get all their product released to their various sales platforms (online stores, Amazon, Comixology, book stores) and thereby make it easier for them, presumably on a publishing level. This is all well and good and it is certainly their prerogative, but, unfortunately, this decision didn’t take into account the realities of comic book stores. You see, we don’t even see D.C. product until Tuesday and it could show up from UPS anywhere between 11AM and 5PM…sometimes even later…and Steve and I still need time to unpack the shipment, sort through it, and pull subscription and special order customers. This doesn’t even address what happens if there are problems with the shipment as there was for this week. As you may imagine this takes a good deal of time. Because of this there is literally NO WAY we can easily put D.C. Comics on sale before Wednesday mornings. I really apologize about this, but even if we magically started getting the D.C. books on Monday (which we’ve been told that due to the logistics of packing and shipping is pretty much impossible to do) it would still be very difficult to just put the D.C. titles out on the rack to make them available for Tuesday sales. So unless the shipping situation changes drastically we will continue to make Wednesday the day for new comics.

Geez…in all of the excitement I nearly forgot to once again mention that Free Comic Book Day is back on the schedule…sort of. Since it is become increasingly obvious that there is no way to host an event with 900+ attendees safely this year, Diamond Comics (as well as the publishers) have decided to institute Free Comic Book Summer. Basically every week between July 15th and September 9th Diamond will be releasing a handful of previously announced FCBD titles for us to hand out to customers. I think that this is the best way to handle it this year and I’m actually curious to see how many “civilian” customers we will see wandering through the store for a freebie and a good look around. In this manner we can still invite the community into the store responsibly and without being mobbed all at once. And while the event is technically through 9/9 because of the titles we decided not to carry for the event  we will not have any new titles for the last week. I’m not sure how we are going to display them yet, but I will include them on the weekly subscription form the week’s they arrive in store. These titles will all be free while supplies last!

IN STORES 9/2/20

FCBD 2020 LADY MECHANIKA

And that’s it for me this week. I’d like to spend another couple of paragraphs opining over the change of business flow and how Thursdays used to be a really dead day with very little for me to do in the store outside of selling comics, but I’ve frankly got too many things to get to and not nearly enough time to finish them. Also, I have to get out of the store as quickly as possible as it is my turn to make dinner (roasted salmon fillets with lemon and rosemary, roasted yellow potatoes, and steamed asparagus) and I have to get started on my Dad’s birthday cake (dark chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling and hot fudge chocolate buttercream frosting). A busy retailer’s job is never done!

Have a great weekend!

EDitorial 6/18/20

Hey, Folks!

I’d really like to start off with my weekly ramblings by thanking everyone who has done their part to help Monarch Comics get back on our feet after the recent shutdown. Honestly, you folks have been great! Despite being closed for two months, having to forego our annual Free Comic Book Day Event, and not having a whole heck of a lot of new comics to sell, we are still on track for having one of our best summer seasons ever. It is truly humbling to see the outpouring of support, especially with the crazy whirlwind that has swept up the comic industry and the rest of the world. Take a bow, Monarch fans, you guys and gals are terrific!

Obviously the new comic input has been extremely limited as the industry slowly works itself back to full steam and I have been remiss in mentioning here that I have begun the process of bringing in portions of my personal collection into the store in order to repopulate our back issue boxes. The back issue boxes, as you may have noticed, have been winnowed down a few boxes after I spent a month sorting through them to get back them back in order. About a quarter of the way through the process I started to get irritated at the amount of back issue material we had in stock that has essentially been moldering away in the boxes for 20+ years and decided a serious Spring cleaning was way overdue. As a result, we now have a ton of dollar books on the sale table and half empty boxes sitting on the back issue tables. Well, I was deciding how to handle my somewhat overzealous job on the back issues when I had to go into my garage looking for some old lawn furniture that I knew I had stored somewhere. Well, I found the lawn furniture and it was too broken down to be of use, but I did get seriously irritated when I started tripping over a pile of long boxes that for some reason I had sitting right in the middle of the floor. It was at that moment that I decided I needed to move these damn boxes out of my way because I was sick of tripping over them.

So I decided to start bringing them in one or two boxes at a time. Of course, I’ve also had to start cursing out “Ed from 2000” for being a lazy S.O.B. who couldn’t be bothered to put his damn comics in order. As a result, I have comics brimming with “new” back issue material, but in very little order. The 4 boxes I’ve brought in so far to sort through have been mostly material from the late 90’s/early 00’s and mostly D.C. titles at that. I didn’t remember being such a fool for the Batman family titles! I don’t remember exactly when I stopped buying individual comics in lieu of trades and hard covers, but once I get into the boxes in deep storage there should be a huge selection of comics from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. It’s really kind of fascinating…like comic book archeology. Some of this stuff I don’t even remember buying, much less reading…lol. In any case, you might want to give the back issue boxes and the dollar boxes a second (or third) look the next time you are in the store. So far I’ve added significant back issues of Batman, Birds of Prey, Catwoman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Marvel’s Ultimate titles. Keep checking back, True Believers, as there will be new stuff added every week…at least until it is all out of my house!

I’m working on June initial orders this week, so if you have any special orders in mind Please let me know before the end of the weekend. This will by first initial order since D.C. Comics left Diamond Distributors, so it is somewhat bittersweet. The New Distributor (USC) has no mechanism in place to accept initial orders and instead they only offer books through their F.O.C. (Final Order Cut-Off) and I have to figure out how to fit this new system into my record keeping apparatus. After hearing laments from other, more technologically advanced retailers about how UCS does not have a system in place to accommodate their P.O.S. (Point of Sale) systems I suppose I should be happy that we haven’t installed more complicated devices in the store. This is the first time I’ve admitted to being happy we are essentially Primitive Screw Heads.

D.C. Comics has also announced this week that Diamond will no longer be filling orders for their line of D.C. Direct toys and statues. They gave us a list of items that were originally offered and ordered through Diamond whose numbers are now cancelled and they supplied us with new release dates for the items and instructions to place orders again through the new distributors. Unfortunately, they sent us an e-mail WITH THE WRONG RELEASE DATES. Also, after much hair pulling and poking around, I could only find a handful of the cancelled items available for reorder in the new system. Le sigh…I suppose it is too much to ask that if you are going to tear down the distribution system you’ve used for 40 years that you’d have a workable replacement ready to go. Please be patient, Gentle Readers, as I do believe we are heading for some stormy weather in a couple of weeks when all of this really gets started. Of course, I fully admit that I could be totally worrying over nothing and that everything will snap right into place, but I kind of doubt it…

We are still taking orders for personalized face masks! We still have some masks in stock (Deadpool, Harley Quinn, Hydra logo, and Venom), but feel free to place an order for pretty much any image you want. Simply message me on Facebook or shoot me an e-mail with the .jpg or .png file you’d like along with whether you want the image over the whole mask or just in the bottom corner. I’ll put the order in and in a couple of days we’ll have your new mask! Remember, all masks are 100% cotton, very breathable, and are machine washable. I’ve washed my mask several times now and it has lost none of its shape or comfort!

Before I get moving for the day I’d like to share a funny little story from this morning. Before the Apocalypse came down on us like a ton of diseased bricks, I bought my Dad tickets to see The Lion King over at Stranahan Theatre. Naturally enough, the performance was “postponed” and I’ve been waiting ever since to find out what to do about the tickets. Well, a post came up from Stranahan on my Facebook scroll yesterday saying that the performance had been rescheduled June 16-July 3! WOO HOO! My Dad was gonna see a bunch of dancing puppets after all! Obviously I didn’t read the post clearly enough as I was pretty busy yesterday, but I resigned to call the box office this morning and find out when my Dad’s tickets would be good. I got through to the box office and a very nice lady told me that the new date for Dad’s tickets would be “June 17th”. I thanked and let her go, but something was nagging at me about that date. I turned around to look at a calendar and realized, “OMG! June 17th was YESTERDAY! GAAAAAH!” I called her right back and explained the problem and she clucked at me and said, “Oh, Dear, that is June 17th…OF 2021! We couldn’t possibly hold a show this year!” I was stunned for a moment and then I burst out laughing! I apologized for being an idiot and thanked her for her help…lol. SO, if you got tickets for The Lion King make sure you give Stranahan Theatre a call for your new dates…lol…and remember…IT’S FOR NEXT YEAR!

Geez…one more thing. I almost forgot. You will notice that Batman #93 is on next week’s invoice. Well for those of you who preordered the 1 in 25 Designer design variant I’m sorry to say that due to an apparent Diamond snafu we will not be receiving our copies until the week of July 1st. I noticed it almost immediately when I opened next week’s invoice and after ascertaining that I did indeed order the book I posted the question on the D.C. Retailer Facebook group. I was worried at first, but it quickly became apparent that pretty much no one serviced by Diamond had the missing cover on their invoices. That was when we ere informed of the slip up and that it would be rectified the following week. (Remember what I said above about “stormy weather”? I didn’t think it would start before the changeover…lol.)

Have a great weekend, Folks!

Hey, Folks!

Well, I hope everyone is out today enjoying this amazing weather! After the broiling we took for the last couple of days it was quite refreshing to not find myself doused in sweat 5 minutes after exiting the shower this morning. It will also be nice to have the door open at the store rather than having to rely on the AC to keep things relatively comfortable.

It’s been quite a week…again…for the comic book industry. I know all of you who follow such things must be curious as to what D.C. Comics latest bombshell announcement means to Monarch Comics in the micro and what it means to the larger industry. I’m never quite sure how much to talk about the back end of the business. How much is “need to know” VS “no one’s business”, but in this day and age with so much information being vomited up on the internet it’s really kind of pointless to sit her and pretend that potentially explosive things aren’t going on behind the scenes. As much as I would sometimes like to go back to the pre-internet days of sensitive business information being blared out to my customer base I know that those days are long gone. So if you aren’t interested in how the sausages get made around here then please feel free to skip down a couple of paragraphs to where I start crowing about the latest issue of Batman…lol.

D.C. Comics announced on Friday afternoon last week that they would be discontinuing their business relationship with Diamond Comic Distributors and moving all of their product to two new distributors, UCS Comic Distributors and Lunar Comic Distributors. Never heard of them before now? That’s because they didn’t exist until about 6 weeks ago. You might recognize them better under their retail store names, Midtown Comics and DCBS. D.C. Comics tapped both of these retail outlets in order to distribute a few titles that got printed before the Apocalypse kicked into gear and shut everything down, including Diamond Comic Distributors. It was, in some quarters, a good option for retail outlets that were still open despite the pandemic and who needed new product on the shelves in order to keep their businesses afloat and to feed the desire for new comics for their customers. This worked particularly well for Midtown and DCBS as the bulk of their business is mail order. All comic shops were invited to sign up to get these comics quicker than they would from Diamond who were still operating at a shutdown level.

As I do believe I explained in another EDitorial, Steve and I discussed the option and decided against participating, mostly because Diamond had assured us that the books in question would be available to us once things started to open up and because we were still closed because of the Ohio lockdown. We correctly reasoned that having new books wouldn’t really help us until we were able to, you know, actually sell them. I did start the process for signing up with UCS if for no other reason than to see what kind of website they had and what kind of service we could expect if we decided to go with them after all. I wasn’t terribly impressed with their website, but, at the time, I understood that it was something that was hastily thrown together in order to begin servicing retailers immediately. I never finished the application process, more fool I.

After this announcement there was a lot of discussion between comic book retailers over D.C.’s motivations and endgame regarding the introduction of a new distribution paradigm. Many were concerned over the fact that these distributors were actually online competitors and some thought it was a conflict of interest and a general bad idea to begin feeding these companies our business information. I didn’t really see the harm it at first, as D.C. Comics framed this as a temporary measure put in place to deal with this particular situation. It worked in D.C.’s favor in a couple of ways. It allowed them to get new product out after two months of nothing, it appeased two of their largest online customers (Midtown and DCBS), and it allowed them to release the new material digitally while dodging accusations from retailers of cutting them out of the profits. It all seemed very reasonable to me and while I thought they were jumping the gun a bit I also realized what a unique set of circumstances we found ourselves in and thought that this could possibly help the industry more than hurt it.

D.C. Comics, however, were playing things VERY close to the vest in this situation. Retailers had questions about these new circumstances and D.C. staffers whose job it is to liaison with us were not being particularly forthcoming. D.C. Comics started to settle into a pattern of obfuscation (“We don’t know.” “Those things are being discussed.”) followed by releasing announcements on Friday afternoons and then turning on the auto responses to their e-mail addresses. As more and more information started to leak in drips and drabs it started to become apparent that these two new distributors were not a temporary solution to a public health crisis, but instead were the shape of things to come. Right up until the official announcement, D.C. Comics were deflecting questions and comments from retailers regarding the changing of the status quo.

Now I can’t claim to have any inside information about D.C. Comics, their corporate masters at ATT, or even the new distribution outfits. I could discuss the rumors swirling around and the conspiracies being discussed behind the scenes between retailers, but that’s all they are….rumors. The most suspicious thing about all of this is the lack of open and frank information as to what D.C. Comics’ motives were in deciding to break off a business relationship that goes back over 30 years and how these kind of sweeping changes could possibly help out an industry that is already going through hard times because of a global health crisis. I can’t for the life of me figure out why there isn’t more transparency on D.C.’s part. I mean, if this big change is for the greater good of the comic book industry doesn’t behoove them to just come out and show us the big picture? Doesn’t all of this secrecy and obfuscation only increase the paranoia and anger of comic book retailers who are already in dire straits?

And I haven’t even begun to discuss the snarls and cracks in the wall that are already starting to appear behind the scenes. Just announcing that you are pulling out of a decades old distribution model and telling us it is for the good of the industry is not enough to make it so. Lunar and UCS have less than a month to be prepared to service over a thousand new retail accounts with D.C. Comics. That is national and international accounts. Can you imagine, just for a moment, the logistics required to make such a thing happen? Questions that still haven’t been answered also include whether Diamond will continue to carry backlist D.C. material (such as trade paperbacks) or what will happen to items ordered through Diamond that don’t make it out before the end of June. And those are just a few concerns that I have. I don’t even want to get into the various discount codes and the extra shipping costs that could potentially be down the line.

I’m really not interested in bashing D.C. Comics. I love D.C. Comics and their stable of characters and I have been following their books for a loooong time. They are also a significant part of my business. It gains me nothing to talk smack about them or loudly and publicly denounce them for any mistreatment, real or imagined. At the end of the day, no matter where I ultimately secure them, I will be carrying D.C. Comics product for a long time and I will continue to promote and enjoy their fictional output.

All of that being said, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bit nervous about how all of this is going to eventually work out. Again, it more the lack of information that makes me nervous rather than any worrying over what we definitively know. I can only hope that our new distributors will be able to transition smoothly and that there will be no interruption of service. I can tell you that I have given them all of the information required to open an account and I have been diligent in making sure that I have ordered all of our D.C. titles through the month of July. We will all just have to take a deep breath and brace for the impact that his chance will make on this hobby that we all love and cherish. Maybe it will go off without a hitch and we will be able to enjoy a new era of D.C. Comics. At this point and after the year we have had so far a little optimism and good news can only be a welcome thing.

As a little side note to this “anti-rant” I’d like to mention that because of the distribution changeover there will be no new D.C. titles shipping the week of July 1st. Additionally it will be a week when Marvel will only be shipping trade paperbacks and hard covers. The good news is that is should be the last week of comic book “austerity” and that the following week D.C. will have a full slate of releases and Marvel should be following suit on 7/15.

Another bright spot on the horizon is Marvel Comics announcement this week that they will be releasing their Free Comic Book Day titles to retailers in late July! The titles include FCBD Spider-Man Venom #1 and FCBD 2020 X-Men #1! Of course, there is no news regarding having an actual FCBD this year and I can’t imagine how it could actually take place with he current health risks associated with large crowds, but it will be nice to get a hold of these two titles which were designed to preview and promote two of Marvel’s biggest events of the year. Naturally, we will have these titles available (X-Men on 7/15 and Spider-Man on 7/22) and free to all of our customers or, really, anyone who wanders into the shop. We might not be able to have a proper FCBD this year, but at least we’ll be able to pay it forward to those of you whose rock solid support has kept us afloat all of these years.

The long anticipated Batman #92 came out this week written by James Tynion and penciled by Guillem March and it does NOT disappoint. This issue of Batman has the best Batman VS Riddler story that I’ve seen in a long time. Every moment of Batman working his way through Riddler’s latest ridiculous (and deadly) riddle trap is a pure pleasure especially since he also dealing with Deathstroke at the same time. I haven’t gotten suck a thrill out of reading a Batman story is quite some time and the whole sequence reminded of one of my “Golden” periods of Batman from the mid-late 80’s. It’s Batman doing his best to outsmart a super villain (or two) without all of the sadness, depression, and darkness that has been a staple of the character for decades. We also get to see the new villain Punchine, Joker’s latest femme fatale, and her first interactions with Harley Quinn and Catwoman. I’m not totally sold on the character yet, but between her appearance in this issue and her secret origin story in this week’s Joker 80th Anniversary Special I’m starting to warm to her. Eagle eyed readers should note the interesting framed photo on the table in the issue’s final page as I do believe it may play into this story’s big finish.

I think I’ve bloviated enough about life, the universe, and comic book retailing for one sunny summer afternoon. I think it goes without saying that we have yet another small comic release next week and this will be the trend until mid-July. We can look forward to the first issue of D.C.’s big “summer tentpole” series, Death Metal, as well as a truly huge amount of new comic collections from Marvel and D.C. I also want to let everyone know that because of the small amount of new product shipping in the week of 7/1 that I will be out of the office for the holiday weekend. I figure since we are already closed on Independence Day it won’t be too much of a big deal if I take off Friday and Sunday as well.

I hope everyone has a GREAT weekend!

Eddie

EDitorial 6/4/20

Hey, Folks!

Well, we’ve managed to make it through another post-apocalyptic week and I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for the weekend! Of course, the weekend doesn’t mean quite the same thing anymore to everyone, but in my case it means that I’ve gotten all of the pesky clerical work for the store completed and I’m ready to just sit back and take care of all of my weekend customers. Plus, Hillman will be over at my place for the weekend which pretty much guarantees board games and beer and more episodes of Star Trek Discovery.

I don’t have much to pontificate on this week which is generally a good thing. I want to reiterate again that D.C. Comics does NOT have a presence in Diamond’s Previews catalog this month and that the only way to check out what they are offering in the summer months is to head over to their website and follow the link to their new online catalog. I actually had to print out a couple of copies of the online catalog, one for myself as a workbook and one for an older customer who doesn’t have much of an internet presence, and I was shocked at how much it costs to print the whole thing! I am actually going to explore other options to possibly make things more convenient for you to order their books, including trying to mock up a “art-less” version of their form with just the title listings. I’ll see what I can do when next month’s catalog is posted.

The new Monarch face masks are in the store right now for you to check out. We currently only have Venom, Deadpool, Harley Quinn, and Hydra masks for sale at the counter, but we are still taking on orders for specific images. Again, simply contact me VIA Facebook messenger or e-mail with a .jpg or .png file with he image you want and I will get it made for you. They are locally produced, but we are still working on a timetable for how quickly we can turn around special orders, but it shouldn’t be more than a couple of days. The face masks retail for $19.99, are 100% cotton, and totally machine washable. I know because I’ve already washed mine to test it and it came out fine.

As of last Friday we currently caught up on all of our missing D.C. titles with the exception of Terrifics #27. I have a big apology to the ten people who bought Terrifics regularly from us, most of you from the beginning of the books run. To reiterate for those of you coming to the story late, because of “reasons” D.C. Comics and Diamond erased our orders for a number of D.C. titles during the shutdown. Either due to my fumbling or Diamond’s error there were several titles whose orders were not received. I managed to fill the orders on all of the titles in question save for the Terrifics issue which was already sold out by the time I realized the mistake. The only slight saving grace here is that D.C. has announced that the final two issues of The Terrifics (#28 & 29) will be digital only, so those of you who wanted to finish the story would have had to go digital for them or wait for the trade paperback in any case. Still, sorry for the snafu. Believe me, after this headache I will be much more alert to these kinds of issues.

I know the last couple of weeks have been a bit light for new material, but trust me…the comic industry is quickly getting back up to speed and over the next month things will be getting closer to the pre-apocalypse shipping schedules. Information is coming in hard and fast concerning different titles that various publishers have cancelled/postponed/switched to “digital only” and I will share this information as well as I am able in the upcoming weeks and months. If you have any questions regarding the updated shipping schedule please don’t hesitate to inquire with me.

Have a great weekend!

EDitorial 5/28/20

Hey, Folks!

I hope everyone’s summer is starting to improve a bit with the warmer weather! Things have been good in the shop, although I really wish that we had some more new comics to sell…lol. I mean, I knew it was going to take a minute to get things back up to speed in the industry, but nothing really prepared me for the reality. This week and last week’s shipments were so tiny that I felt somewhat embarrassed by how empty the new release rack has been. Unfortunately, next week will not be any better as it is a Marvel “skip week” with only new trades and hard covers being released. DC’s comic load is also rather flimsy. Hopefully, by mid-July everything will be a little bit more better…😊

I know that many of you are wondering where the missing DC titles from this week’s shipment. You might recall that I reported to you last week that there were a handful of DC titles in which my orders were erased from my FOC page. I managed to get orders in while they were still showing “in stock” for most of the titles and thought that would be that. Unfortunately, the books did not show up yesterday and I have not yet been invoiced for them. I wasn’t actually too concerned at first as Diamond has been tinkering with their reorder system since before the Apocalypse and I have seen stuff get shipped long before I see it on an actual invoice.

But I sent an e-mail anyway, just in case there was some sort of chicanery going on here. The e-mail went out around 6:30 yesterday morning. I sent it out while I was still enjoying my morning coffee and reading the news. (As a brief digression, I checked the status of the reorder in question first thing in the morning rather waiting until I got to work because I had strange dreams about missing books. I awoke from a dream wondering if I remembered to order the variant DC titles that were printed on thin slices of sweet potato. Sweet potato? Yeah, I don’t get my subconscious either…) Again, I wasn’t terribly concerned about it at the time as I had an order confirmation with the books I had ordered. That’s usually a pretty good indicator I’ll have them unless they get left out of a box or arrived damaged. But as the day wore on and there was no response I started to get a little worried. As more people came in asking for the missing titles I found myself obsessively checking my e-mail for a reply and an explanation of when I could expect the missing titles.

Well, I just got the response at 10:12am. Yes, you read that right. It took 28 hours to get a response to a simple inquiry. I’m not saying this to talk smack about my distributor…I just want to give you a small example of what comic retailers are dealing with in the aftermath of the Apocalypse. Anyway, a random customer service rep caught my question and got back to me about the missing comics. He assured me that the order was indeed processed and that the books were on their way. He went on to explain how Diamond’s reorder system is a bit backed up right now, but is quickly catching up. He then told me that I had a couple of reorder boxes showing up at the store today and that the books in question be in them.

You would think that would be a clear, concise, and comforting reply. Unfortunately, I am rather intimately familiar with how the Diamond system works as I have been using it for 30+ years. You see, there is a place on the Diamond website called “Shipment Tracking”. When you go to the page it will show you a list of boxes on their way to you with a UPS tracking number that you can click on to see exactly where your box is as well as a button called “Shipment Details”. When you click on the “Shipment Details” button the system will show you a copy of the packing list that should, theoretically, show you everything that is in the box. When I checked the shipping details it contained items from the reorder I put in on Sunday and nothing from the reorder in question.

Le sigh. This is information that should have been available to the customer service rep. He should have been easily able to access this information, see that the books in question were not listed as being part of the shipment, and been tipped off that perhaps a little more investigation into my situation was necessary. Instead I had to send out yet another e-mail to explain the problem still hasn’t been completely addressed and now I have to wait for possibly another 24 hours for a response to basically the same question. Of course, I suppose it is still possible that the missing books were somehow included in today’s boxes and just didn’t make the shipping list. I won’t know until UPS blows through in a couple of hours. In any case, here’s hoping the damn things show up before the next issues ship. I’ll make sure to keep you posted.

The new Previews came in this week for the material set to ship out in August. It is a different sort of Previews then we are all used to in that there is no DC Comics catalog and the Marvel catalog has been folded into the main magazine. Although I don’t know for sure, I do believe the separate Marvel catalog will make its comeback next month. Most of the Marvel material spotlighted in the new Previews are old solicitations and reschedules of existing solicitations. There are a handful of new titles offered, but clearly not enough to bother with a separate catalog. Fair enough…I can see the wisdom in this decision.

DC Comics, however, is a horse of a different color. DC Comics, as I do believe I posted about last week, has completely taken their catalog from Diamond. This is because they have adopted a “multi-distributor” model that includes online retailers MidTown Comics and DCBS. As a result, the could no longer have a “DC Previews” that would be exclusive to Diamond. DC has decided to rectify this problem by no longer having a printed physical copy of their order form. Now if you want to access DC Comic’s monthly solicitations you will have go to their website and download a .pdf file with the information. It’s basically the same as their old printed catalogs, just as a .pdf.

I posted the link for the new catalog last week when this was initially sprung on us. For those of you who missed it, however, you can access it HERE. I will also be posting a copy of the catalog on the Facebook page and the website assuming I can figure out how to do it…lol. Now I’m not a big fan of this move mostly because I need a physical copy in order to properly make notes and process my initial orders, but I also have a couple of customers who are not particular internet savvy and it’s going to be a little more difficult getting the material in front of them. In any case, DC Comics certainly didn’t ask for my opinion and we will just have to deal with the situation. On the bright side, DC Comics is still included in the “short form” Diamond consumer order form. Ask me if you’d like a copy.

Let me also take a moment to announce that starting next week Monarch Comics will start carrying a selection of super hero themed face masks! These cotton face masks are extremely comfortable to wear for long periods and our initial offerings will include Deadpool, Hydra, Venom, and Harley Quinn. They will retail for $19.99. My supplier can also print custom images, so please let me know if there is a specific character you’d like to see on your mask and I will order one for you. This is all new for me so I can’t say yet how quick the turnaround will be for special orders, but I can’t imagine it would take more than a week or so. I fully expect to have a bigger selection if these take off the way I expect them to. It’s the best way to be stylish and safe…😊

That’s it for me this week, Folks! Have a great weekend and hopefully I will have more comics to sell you on June 10th!

EDitorial 5/21/20

Hey, Folks!

This certainly is an interesting time to be alive and it is made more interesting when you are a comic book retailer. Before I take a deep breath and get into the latest comic industry drama, I’d like to once again thank everyone who is doing their best to observe our Covid-19 safety policy. It’s heartening to see so many comic fans sucking it up and dealing with a few moments of inconvenience in order to get their comics and a bit of chin wag with me. You guys are THE BEST.

I knew there would likely be some bumps along the road to getting the comic industry restarted after its two-month shutdown. I mean, you don’t just shut down an entire industry from printers to distributors to retail shops while publishers are unable to go into the office and then get expect everything to just go back to “normal” overnight. I preface my comments with this statement in order to let you know that I realize that we are all essentially in the same boat and choppy waters were to be expected. Unfortunately, we have hit a small snag.

Wednesday is traditionally the busiest day of the week for me which I’m sure comes as no surprise to any of you. Besides dealing with the new comic shipment and all of the smiling faces (currently obscured by masks…lol), it also the day that the following week’s invoice is released as well as a complete list of everything shipping out from Diamond. A major portion of my day is whipping my shipping list into shape and carefully constructing the subscription form which is why so many of you see me manning my desk on Wednesday morning/afternoon. I want to get into it as soon as possible so that I can familiarize myself with the upcoming week’s books…mostly so I can answer any questions during folk’s weekly visits.

I was diligently working away at the 5/27 shipping list yesterday when I came to a sudden and shocking realization. There were several titles that are shipping next week from DC that were not on my invoice. At first I wasn’t too concerned as Diamond’s track record with properly updating their website’s files has not been particularly good since this Covid-19 thing started, but after double AND triple checking I realized that there were indeed titles shipping that we didn’t have coming in. I frantically started clicking all over Diamond’s website and my e-mails to find some evidence of my orders, but couldn’t find anything. I can’t tell you how badly my heart started racing. It was literally one of my worst nightmares suddenly roaring to life right in front of me. How could this be happening!?!

Let’s turn on the Way Back machine and go back a month and take a look at the situation. Back in late April, while most of the country was still shut down, online comic retailers Midtown Comics and DCBS were making some noise about the frustration of not having new titles to offer to their patrons. It became known that there were a handful of DC Comics that managed to be printed before the printers/distribution system shut down and those retailers wanted to get their hands on the books as soon as possible. DC Comics, however, has a exclusive distribution deal with Diamond (more on that in a minute) and they also knew if they just made these titles available to Midtown and DCBS that the hue and cry from frustrated brick and mortar shop retailers would be terrible indeed. As a result, they worked out a deal with Midtown and DCBS. They would get access to this slate of DC Comics, but in return they had to agree to act as “distributors” of the titles to other retailers in order to level the playing field. DC Comics, perhaps rightly, reasoned that if everyone had an opportunity to get the books at the same time through Midtown and DCBS then that would make everyone happy. This, of course, ignores the fact that most retailers with store fronts were closed and couldn’t sell anything, much less a handful of lesser DC titles, but I digress and it’s really not the point of this diatribe. Let’s just say that in their minds DC Comics had found an equitable way to address the problem of Diamond Distributors lingering shutdown.

Actually, let me take a moment for two small digressions. The first is to answer the question of “How could DC Comics do that considering they have an exclusive deal with Diamond?” I, too, wondered this and after a bit of poking around I found the answer. During the last contract renegotiation with Diamond, DC Comics added a provision that stated they could end their exclusive deal with Diamond with 30 days notice at any time they wished. The second digression is “Why didn’t Monarch Comics take advantage of the new distribution deal and get instant access to these DC titles?” The simple answer is that not only were we not open at the point they would have started shipping, but after doing the math I quickly realized that we would actually be losing money by switching to these alternative distributors for such a paucity of titles. Plus, Diamond assured me that they would be able to supply us with the books as soon as they reopened. Fair enough. End of digression…

So, as the situation stood, suddenly there were two new quasi-distributors operating and offering mainly lower tiered DC titles a couple of weeks before Diamond. It was then that the serious missteps began to go down. DC Comics decided that for whatever reasons comic retailers were not smart enough to manage multiple distributors and they became worried that retailers who ordered the books from Midtown/DCBS would screw up and order the same titles from Diamond by mistake. As a result, DC and Diamond cancelled all of our previous orders for the titles and then told us that if we still wanted them from Diamond then we would have to go into the system and put our numbers back in to the FOC page. This personally irritated me because by all accounts very few retailers actually took up the Midtown/DCBS offer and I thought they should be responsible for their own orders and whether or not they were duplicated by accident. It was also ridiculous because all of the titles in question are going to be 100% returnable so even someone had duplicated an order through both vendors they wouldn’t be stuck with any unsold titles.

I hadn’t really been monitoring Diamond’s website for a couple of weeks at this point, but I read all about the new FOC policy from other retailers and went to work plugging my numbers for these titles back in. Of course, I was grumbling the whole time as I couldn’t understand why I was being penalized for someone else’s business decision, but it wasn’t some horrible job so I just did it. Steve and I decided early on that we were not going to start slashing our orders because all of these titles were going to be returnable and we decided to remain optimistic that the lion’s share of you would be returning as soon as the doors opened. So I just went into the system to re-enter the information. I have never had a problem with Diamond’s FOC system in the past and although we receive an order confirmation e-mail from Diamond for any FOC orders I didn’t bother to look at it because it normally just reflects whatever I ordered. That was a mistake I will not soon forget.

That more or less brings us up to yesterday morning when, with dawning horror, I realized that there were no records of me ordering ten different DC titles set to be released next week. At first I began doubting myself…did I miss ordering them? I clicked all over Diamond’s website for some proof of my FOC order, but couldn’t find anything but the glaring red text of “No Orders Found”. I went to my e-mail box and sorted through order confirmation e-mails until I found the one that should have had my orders noted on it. There was a confirmation for about half of the books and the other orders were not showing at all. This was naturally distressing, but I put aside my astonishment and growing frustration and instead just concentrated on salvaging the situation and “advance reordering” copies of everything that was apparently missed.

The good news is that all but, one title was available for reorder still. The bad news is because of the way Diamond’s reorder system is structured it is generally impossible to “direct ship” a reorder for product that hasn’t been released yet, so chances are we will not have the ten titles in question until the following Wednesday. I mean, I got the advance reorder in fairly early yesterday once I figured out what we were missing, so there is a small chance that Diamond will have enough notice to throw the books in a box with our regular shipment, but I’m not betting mom’s prescription drug money on it. Now even though the following titles won’t be here until the June 3rd shipment I am still including them on the weekly sub form for 5/27 just on the off chance that they might show up after all. If they do end up delayed then I will have everyone’s orders on file and I will pull them when they finally show up. I will mark the titles that are probably going to be shipping to us late with an * on the sub form.

The titles that will most likely be delayed a week are:

AQUAMAN #59

BASKETFUL OF HEADS #7

BATMAN BEYOND #43

BOOKS OF MAGIC #19

FLASH #754

HE MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE MULTIVERSE #6

LOW LOW WOODS #5

SUICIDE SQUAD #5

TEENT TITANS #41

TERRIFICS #27 (This is the only title that went to backorder. Hopefully copies will show up, but if they don’t then I apologize profusely. While it is NOT the final issue of the series it is the final print issue before going digital for the final two issues.)

So I want to make it clear at the offset that I’m not terribly interested in assigning blame here as it really doesn’t matter at this point. That being said, I KNOW that I put in those numbers. I have no idea how or why they were zeroed out. It’s also interesting to note that several other retailers that I have communicated with also reported that their orders for these exact same titles disappeared after completing their own FOC orders. I was beginning to feel a little gaslighted…lol.

ME: “I know I put in those numbers!”

DIAMOND: “No, you didn’t.”

ME: “Maybe I didn’t…”

I any case, this will be a relatively quick fix to a distressing problem and, save for the already doomed Terrifics title, I will eventually get these books into your hands. Thanks in advance for your patience while we deal with these little hiccups and I will endeavor to do my best to assure this doesn’t happen again.

Now I will move on to another small problem since the industry started up again and this time I will be assigning just a smidgen of blame. Now, I understand that everyone wants to know what the publishers, particularly DC and Marvel, are doing in order to get their titles back on schedule. You know What? I’d really like to know as well. The problem is that Diamond Distributors have either not bothered or found themselves incapable of updating the back end of their website. There are A LOT of titles that were previously solicited and ordered that have either been removed from the system or else have ridiculously wrong release dates. And, yes, I know that if I hunted around the internet long enough then I could find some sort of updated ship list, but the problem is that this is information that should be available directly from my distributor whose job, I must stress, is to deliver books I’ve ordered and give me the information I need to order them. Once again, I understand they we are all in the same boat in the mad scramble to get everything up and running, but there is no reason that some third-rate comic book news website should have some of this information posted while my distributor is woefully under informed. There is really nothing to do for it save suck it up and hope that someone, somewhere, further up the supply chain line will finally get their $#!% together. I’ve out together a list of DC titles that were in the Diamond system as being released next week, but are not shipping, and, in some cases, are going to be resolicted at a later date. I’ll try to hunt down the actually updated release dates and post them before the end of the week.

The titles include:

BATGIRL #47

BATMAN SUPERMAN #10

DETECTIVE COMICS #1023

DOLLAR COMICS WONDER WOMAN #14

DOLLAR COMICS WONDER WOMAN #206

GENERATION ONE

JOHN CONSTANTINE HELLBLAZER #7

LAST GOD #7

SHAZAM #13

SUPERGIRL #42

WONDER WOMAN 84 GIANT #1

There has also been a bunch of titles from smaller publishers that were previously solicited that have had their orders cancelled. I have compiled a partial list of titles for your perusal. It’s only a partial list because the only titles we are explicitly notified about are titles of which we have actual orders. Again, I’ll try to hunt up a more complete list in my spare time (HA!). If you have any questions about something you special ordered or just whether or not a favorite title is still shipping then do not hesitate to message me about it or mention it in when you are in the store (although I wouldn’t bother asking Steve…he has NO idea what’s coming or going…lol). Here’s the list of Monarch orders that have been cancelled:

Finally, let me mention that initial orders for the April Previews (originally for items shipping in June) are due by retailers today. I’ve gotten my first draft of the order form completed and I’m going to be working at plugging in special orders and the like this afternoon. From what I’ve read from other retailers, a lot of the material from DC Comics and Marvel Comics is already going to be resolicited in next month’s Previews (shipping in next week!) so I’m not sure how much of the orders I put in we are actually going to be held to, but I WILL be making sure that our orders register. If there’s something of interest in the April Previews that you know you want and are afraid we may not be carrying then please do not hesitate to contact me and I’ll make sure that we have you covered!

Okay…I’m done being a windy bastard this week…lol. I will be here in the store the rest of the week for normal business hours to answer any of your questions or concerns. I’d like to take a moment to remind everyone that we will be closed on Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.

Have a great holiday weekend and I’ll talks at ya next week!

WAIT! Another quick, last minute note! There were a couple of titles (Aquaman #59 AND Flash #754 come to mind) in which there was only one cover or the other available for reorder. Apparently there was a printer problem in getting all of the copies to Diamond or some such nonsense, so we will only be capable of offering one cover choice on the sub form.

When are things going back to normal again?

EDitorial 5/13/20

Hey, Folks!

Well, we are back in business!

I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed my recent “vacation”…for the first two weeks. By Day 15 I was close to losing my damn mind. Thank goodness I had Hillman around to keep me company and playing board games with me or else I would certainly be banging my head against the wall in Arkham.

I’m not sure where to start with this initial return to Editorial. I suppose I should go over the store rules involving our reopening. In no particular order, please remember the following when you visit Monarch post-apocalypse:

  • Please wear a face mask while you are in the store. Governor DeWine stopped short of making face masks mandatory for customers, but Steve and I will have our masks on while patrons are in the store. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
  • Please observe social distancing rules as much as possible within the confines of the store. Of course, I know that the store is the size of a postage stamp and this may get a bit difficult in regards to the New Release rack, but we would appreciate if you didn’t crowd the rack.
  • We are only allowing up to 7 patrons into the store at a time. Hopefully this will help with the social distancing issue. If you happen to arrive at the store and the door is locked then please be patient and we will let you in as soon as someone exits. We haven’t actually had to lock the door yet, but I am anticipating it becoming more of a problem next week when the comic delivery day goes back to normal.
  • Please limit your visit to 10-15 minutes so that we can continue to keep the line moving and we can cut down on casual exposure. I must admit that I have the biggest mouth at any given time within a five mile square area and I have been starved for comic conversation so if I get a serious case of diarrhea of the mouth while you are desperately trying to get away then feel free to spray me with a can of Lysol and go running while I am gasping for breath. It may be your only chance of escape.
  • Monarch Comics has a curbside pick-up option if you don’t feel comfortable coming into the store. Simply use Messenger to contact us or give the store a call and we will work with you to set up a time for pick up. As of this writing, no one has actually taken me up on the curbside offer and I am on tenterhooks waiting to see how it would work…lol.

Many people have questioned me this week about what is being done to bring the comic industry back online and when we can expect new product to make its way into the store. Well, the easy answer is “next week”. The rest of the explanation is a little more complicated. Understand that the comic industry more or less completely shutdown shortly after Ohio did so there was absolutely nothing moving through the system. Now that states are slowly opening up and businesses are preparing the New Normal it is going to take a couple of weeks for the industry to get up to speed again and you can expect to have relatively small shipping weeks through the month of June until the publishers can get their new shipping schedules together.

There will be no May Previews this year. The April Previews (with material originally scheduled to ship in June) initial orders are now due May 22nd. The June Previews will ship on 5/27 and will most likely contain solicitations for titles shipping in July/August, but at this point we can only wait and see.

As of today there are still a host of comics from DC and Marvel that have yet to be rescheduled. Know that I am (and have been) closely monitoring the situation and will pass any information on to you as soon as I receive it. Also understand that anything that you may have special ordered before our ordeal began should still be on order and coming in the store at some point.

Let me just say what a pleasure it was seeing everyone here in the store yesterday and today. I mean it, Folks, missed you terribly and even with the limited face time we have now the conversations I had yesterday was like a cool bucket of water after being trapped in the desert for two months. Here’s hoping we don’t get shut down again in a few weeks or months. At least now if we get shut down we have a little experience dealing with it. Frankly, I seriously doubt if the comic industry will shut down quite as completely the next time around and I want to let you know now that as long as Monarch Comics is receiving new product in the door we will continue to service you in the matter to which you’ve become accustomed.
